NICU Families
Family Connects NJ offers in-home support for your health today; follow-up when your baby is discharged.
We’re here to listen and support you and your family as you anxiously await your baby’s discharge from the NICU.
Having a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be a difficult and stressful time for you and your family. Lots of trips back and forth to the hospital to be with your little one, and lots of preparations for when your baby is finally able to come home.
While your baby is getting the care that they need in the NICU, it is still important to take care of you, as parents. The immediate post-partum period is especially critical for the physical and emotional health of the person who has just given birth.
Family Connects NJ is here to help! Our nurse home visits are designed with families like yours in mind to help you feel supported, healthy, and cared for. We can address the questions and health concerns you have now, and when the time is right, we can come back and visit with you and your baby.
Here are a few of the many ways our nurses can help:
- Screening for health issues that could otherwise be overlooked, particularly at this stressful time;
- Support with breastfeeding and newborn care as you prepare to bring your baby home;
- Anticipatory guidance on important health topics;
- Connecting families to community support and resources when experiencing postpartum depression, anxiety, or other types of emotional distress;
- A follow-up visit once your baby is discharged from the NICU.
Should you decide that you are not ready for a visit until your infant’s discharge, we understand. You can still have a visit up to 12 weeks after birth, or up to 30 days after your infant’s discharge from the NICU, whichever is later. If you need to schedule a visit later than 30 days after your baby's birth, your local FCNJ nurse provider may need to assist you with scheduling your visit. Reach out; we're ready when you're ready.
PARENT TESTIMONIAL: "[My FCNJ nurse Brittany] did my first visit in the hospital while my baby was in the NICU following what was a very traumatic birth that occurred nearly 5 weeks before my baby’s due date. It was an extremely difficult situation as I wasn’t able to take my baby home and I spent every single day in the NICU following my discharge. Brittany allowed me to voice my feelings and discuss how I was coping with everything going on while also checking to make sure that I was healing properly. "… She has provided incredible advice to me as a first time mom that has made this experience so much smoother and calmed many of my fears and anxieties. … Thank you for your part in implementing such an amazing program for new moms. Without Brittany this experience would have looked much different." - Danielle, NICU Parent |
